Bangladesh cricket enters a new era as BCB has officially appointed a new T20I captain, with off spinner Mahedi Hasan as the deputy, ahead of the team’s crucial away series against the UAE and Pakistan in May-June 2025. This leadership change comes after Najmul Hossain Shanto stepped down from the role earlier in the year, setting the stage for Litton’s first full-time captaincy assignment in any format.

Bangladesh Cricket Board named Litton Das as the new skipper to lead in T20Is, his elevation to captaincy marks a significant milestone in his career. While he has previously led Bangladesh in one Test, seven ODIs, and four T20Is as a stand-in, this is his first appointment as a full-time skipper. Litton’s leadership credentials were on display last December when he guided Bangladesh to a 3-0 clean sweep against the West Indies in a T20I series, stepping in for an injured Shanto. Now fully recovered from a recent finger injury that ruled him out of the PSL, Litton is ready to lead from the front.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board has entrusted Litton with the captaincy through to the T20 World Cup 2026, signalling confidence in his ability to shape the team’s future. Hasan, named vice-captain, brings valuable experience and tactical acumen to the leadership group.

The selectors have also refreshed the 16-member squad for the seven-match away series, blending experience with new energy. Najmul Hossain Shanto, Towhid Hridoy, Tanvir Islam, Mustafizur Rahman, and Shoriful Islam make their return, bolstering the team’s depth and versatility. Notably, Hridoy and Mustafizur missed the previous series due to injury and personal reasons, respectively.

However, there are some surprising omissions. Afif Hossain, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Ripon Mondol, and Taskin Ahmed are left out. Taskin is still recovering from an ankle injury, while Mehidy’s exclusion is unexpected given his recent leadership roles.

Bangladesh’s tour begins with two T20Is against the UAE in Sharjah on May 17 and 19, followed by a five-match series in Pakistan from May 25 to June 3. These matches are seen as vital preparation for a packed international calendar, including the upcoming Asia Cup, and a key test of Litton’s captaincy as the team builds towards the T20 World Cup.
