As the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 edges toward its high-stakes finale, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially revealed the updated venues for the much-anticipated playoff matches.

BCCI releases revised IPL 2025 playoff venue list

In a significant shift, the IPL final, initially scheduled to be held at the historic Eden Gardens in Kolkata, has now been moved to the colossal Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. With this change, Ahmedabad will once again take center stage in IPL history, having previously hosted the 2023 final, which famously stretched into a two-day event due to persistent rainfall.

The final is now set to be played on June 3, and Qualifier 2 will also be staged at the same venue on June 1, turning the world’s largest cricket stadium into the epicenter of IPL 2025’s climax. The BCCI has also assigned the hosting duties of Qualifier 1 and the Eliminator to a rising venue on the Indian cricket map,  the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh (Mullanpur). This stadium, equipped with modern amenities and praised for its pristine pitch and outfield, will see high-octane playoff action on May 29 and May 30, respectively. This marks a significant milestone for the venue, which has steadily grown in prominence since its inception.

Kolkata and Hyderabad lose hosting rights

Initially, the playoff roadmap had Eden Gardens set to host the final and Qualifier 2, while the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad was designated for Qualifier 1 and the Eliminator. However, these plans were overturned in light of updated weather forecasts and risk assessments. Kolkata, although an iconic cricket destination, faced increasing concerns over unpredictable weather patterns during late May and early June. Hyderabad too posed logistical challenges due to recent rain interruptions and local scheduling conflicts.

According to an official release, as per the Hindustan Times, from the BCCI, the IPL Governing Council evaluated these risks and made the decision to relocate key matches in the interest of player safety, ground readiness, and audience convenience. The reshuffle ensures that playoff matches are played without the looming threat of abandonment or disruption due to adverse weather.

“The new venues for the Playoffs were decided by the IPL Governing Council keeping in mind the weather conditions and other parameters,”

Who has qualified and who’s still in the hunt for playoffs

With the league stage nearing its conclusion, three teams have already confirmed their places in the IPL 2025 playoffs, Gujarat Titans, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Punjab Kings. Gujarat Titans have led the table for most of the season, displaying consistency in both batting and bowling departments. RCB, after a strong team display under Rajat Patidar’s leadership, have not only qualified but are also aiming to finish in the top two, which would give them an extra chance in the knockout stages.

Punjab, under a new leadership setup, have been one of the most improved sides of the season and secured qualification with key wins down the stretch. The fourth playoff spot remains undecided, with Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals locked in a virtual shootout. Their upcoming face-off at the Wankhede Stadium will determine who secures the final playoff berth. If Mumbai wins, they will go through, but if Delhi manages to defeat them, the race will extend to the final round of league matches.
