The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 has seen a surge in slow over-rate penalties, with several team captains fined as the league enforces stringent timing regulations. With the fast-paced T20 format requiring strict adherence to over-rate rules, the fines have become a recurring theme this season, significantly impacting team strategies and drawing attention to leadership discipline across franchises.

The IPL governing body has made it clear that slow over-rates will not be tolerated, especially as the league faces increasing scrutiny over match durations and broadcast timings. As a result, captains are bearing the brunt of enforcement measures, with fines escalating for repeat offences.

Captains who have been punished in IPL 2025

Among the most notable names fined this season are Hardik Pandya (Mumbai Indians), Rishabh Pant (Lucknow Super Giants), and Shreyas Iyer (Punjab Kings). Their infractions have not only drawn financial penalties but have also led to tactical disadvantages during games.

Hardik Pandya (Mumbai Indians):

Hardik, returning to lead MI after a one-match suspension, was fined ₹12 lakh for maintaining a slow over-rate during Mumbai’s match against Gujarat Titans. It marked MI’s first over-rate offence of the season, and Pandya’s return was marred by the fine following their defeat to his former franchise. The fine served as a reminder of the discipline expected from captains, especially under the spotlight of high-stakes encounters.

Rishabh Pant (Lucknow Super Giants):

Pant faced a steeper penalty of ₹24 lakh after LSG committed their second slow over-rate violation in a match against Mumbai Indians. In accordance with IPL regulations, a second offence triggers a doubled fine for the captain and fines of ₹6 lakh or 25% of the match fee (whichever is lesser) for each member of the playing XI. Pant’s leadership has come under scrutiny, not just for tactical decisions but now also for over-rate compliance.

Shreyas Iyer (Punjab Kings):

Iyer was fined ₹12 lakh following PBKS’s match against Chennai Super Kings, where his side was found one over short. Though Punjab emerged victorious, the slow over-rate led to an in-match penalty requiring them to field an additional player inside the 30-yard circle from the 19th over onwards. Such sanctions can turn the tide in close contests, emphasizing the importance of timely bowling changes and over management.

Additional Offenders:

Other captains reported to have been fined this season include Shubman Gill (Gujarat Titans), Axar Patel (Delhi Capitals), Sanju Samson and Riyan Parag (Rajasthan Royals), and Rajat Patidar (Royal Challengers Bengaluru).

Broader impact of the punishment on IPL teams

With teams already grappling with intense competition, injuries, and player rotations, the added pressure of over-rate management has become a key aspect of captaincy. Fines aside, repeat offences could result in suspensions for captains, further complicating the campaign for teams chasing playoff berths.

As the tournament progresses towards the playoffs, teams will be under increased pressure to not only perform but also maintain discipline. The IPL’s strict enforcement of over-rate rules serves as a message that cricketing excellence must go hand in hand with professionalism and time management.
