Chennai Super Kings (CSK) ended their IPL 2025 campaign on a high note, courtesy of a blistering knock from Dewald Brevis, who hammered a 23-ball 57 to dismantle Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. His whirlwind innings not only entertained fans but also played a pivotal role in CSK’s massive 83-run triumph over the table-toppers.
Coming into the side as a late replacement for Gurjapneet Singh, Brevis made every opportunity count. His second fifty of the season came with effortless flair, featuring clean hitting and fearless strokeplay, pushing Chennai to a formidable total of 230. The young South African’s performance earned him the Player of the Match accolade in what was only his sixth outing of the season.
Dewald Brevis on comparisons with AB de Villiers
Following his standout performance, Brevis addressed the media and spoke candidly about the persistent comparisons with South African great AB de Villiers. While the young batter expressed his admiration for the former RCB legend, he made it clear that carving out his own identity is his priority.
“I needed to play an innings like that, very grateful for it. I need to keep playing, that’s what everyone has said. AB is someone I look up to; he has helped to improve my game, but I want to be my own player. It’s an honour to be compared to AB de Villiers,” said Brevis as quoted by Zeenews.
The 21-year-old added that he’s focused on staying grounded, enjoying his cricket, and continuing to develop. He said: “I am happy, I am enjoying the game, having fun out there. Need to be myself. I have been the kid who has always enjoyed the moment while playing out there. I kept telling my mind, ‘it’s cool, not warm (conditions)’,”.

Despite joining the CSK squad midway through the tournament, Brevis left a lasting impression. In just six games, he amassed 225 runs at a remarkable strike rate of 180—statistics that reflect his game-changing ability and potential for future stardom. With his power-packed performances and mature mindset, Brevis has not only lived up to expectations but has also set the stage for what could be a stellar IPL career ahead.
