As the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 reaches its midpoint, the Mumbai Indians (MI) have experienced a season filled with highs and lows. Under the leadership of Hardik Pandya, MI have secured four victories in eight matches, placing them in the middle of the points table. Notable performances include a thrilling win over Delhi Capitals, where MI’s bowlers executed a dramatic hat-trick of run-outs to clinch the match. However, the team has also faced setbacks, such as a narrow defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru, despite commendable efforts from their batting lineup.
Another significant setback MI faced in their IPL 2025 campaign was unfortunate injury of their promising spinner, Vignesh Puthur. Puthur, who made headlines with his impressive debut earlier this season, has been ruled out for the remainder of the tournament. In response, MI has signed leg-spinner from Punjab as Puthur’s replacement bringing a wealth of domestic experience to the squad.
Vignesh Puthur’s memorable debut for MI in IPL 2025
One of the standout moments for MI this season was the emergence of Puthur, a 24-year-old left-arm wrist-spinner from Kerala. Making his IPL debut against Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Puthur delivered a remarkable performance by taking three crucial wickets, including that of CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad in his very first over. His spell of 3/32 played a significant role in keeping MI competitive in the match. Post-match, cricket legend MS Dhoni acknowledged Puthur’s impressive debut with a pat on the back and words of encouragement, a gesture that resonated with fans and highlighted the young spinner’s potential.

MI announces replacement for Puthur
In a latest turn of events, MI have announced that Puthur will be sidelined for the remainder of the IPL 2025 season due to injury. To fill the void, the team has signed leg-spinner Raghu Sharma as his replacement. Born on March 11, 1993, in Jalandhar, Punjab, Raghu brings with him a wealth of domestic cricket experience, having represented Punjab and Puducherry. In 11 first-class matches, he has taken 57 wickets at an average of 19.59, with best figures of 7/56. Though he is yet to make his IPL debut, Raghu’s consistent performances in domestic circuits have earned him this opportunity.
Joining MI at his base price of INR 30 lakhs Raghu’s inclusion adds depth to the team’s spin department. As MI continue their quest for a playoff spot, Raghu’s experience and skill set could prove invaluable in the upcoming matches.
