India are set to embark on their first major Test assignment in the new World Test Championship (WTC) cycle with a challenging five-match series in England, beginning June 20. But this time, the team will be without two of its biggest icons—Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli—who have both stepped away from the red-ball format. Their retirements mark the end of an era and leave a significant void in both leadership and experience as India gear up for a crucial overseas tour.
Rohit and Kohli were not just key batters but also leaders who shaped India’s modern-day Test identity. Their absence will undoubtedly test the resilience and maturity of the current squad, especially under new head coach Gautam Gambhir, who faces his first Test series in charge.
Leadership dilemma: Who will take the baton from Rohit Sharma?
With Rohit no longer leading the side, the spotlight now shifts to who can take charge of the Indian Test team. While several names are floating around, the options are not as straightforward as they may seem.
Jasprit Bumrah, who has previously captained India in Tests, is respected for his calm temperament and tactical acumen. However, his injury history raises questions about his availability for a full series in demanding English conditions. Shubman Gill, another young prospect, has shown promise and leadership ability in the IPL but is yet to be tested as a captain in the red-ball format. KL Rahul also brings some experience, but his inconsistent form concerns could be a stumbling block.

Ravichandran Ashwin backs a surprise name for India’s Test captaincy
Amid the swirling debates, former all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin has thrown in a surprise candidate—Ravindra Jadeja. Speaking on his YouTube show Ash Ki Baat, Ashwin backed Jadeja as a worthy contender to lead India, citing his vast experience and influence within the team setup.
“We should not say this, but Ravindra Jadeja is the most experienced person in that team now. If you’re thinking of grooming a new leader, Jadeja can take charge for a couple of years with a vice-captain under him. It may seem like a wildcard, but it’s worth considering,” said Ashwin.
Ashwin acknowledged that Jadeja’s brief stint as Chennai Super Kings captain in the IPL didn’t go well but insisted that the Test format presents a different challenge and opportunity.
“I’m not saying he must be the captain, but he should definitely be in the conversation,” added Ashwin.
