Already knocked out of the tri-nation series in Sri Lanka following three consecutive losses, South Africa Women had nothing but pride to play for. And they delivered a spirited performance, capping off their campaign with a commanding victory over the hosts in Colombo. The result might not change their fortunes in the tournament, but it did bring a historic moment for South African women’s cricket.

Chloe Tryon shines in a dominant all-round show

The star of the show was all-rounder Chloe Tryon, who delivered a match-winning performance with both bat and ball. Her explosive batting set the tone early on, but it was her sensational bowling spell that truly stole the limelight. Tryon registered a rare hat-trick—only the third ever by a South African woman in One Day Internationals.

Tryon’s hat-trick enters an exclusive club, marking just the 13th instance of a hat-trick in Women’s ODI history. For South Africa, it adds to a modest but proud list of individual brilliance.

Dane van Niekerk – 2013

A pioneer in South African women’s cricket, Dane van Niekerk became the first female cricketer from her country to achieve a hat-trick in One Day Internationals. The milestone came during the first ODI of the 2013 series against the West Indies in Basseterre, St Kitts.

Van Niekerk, known for her clever leg-spin and tactical mind, dismantled the Caribbean middle-order with pinpoint accuracy and guile. Her hat-trick not only shifted the momentum in South Africa’s favour but also established her as a world-class bowler early in her career. The achievement remains a landmark moment in Proteas Women’s cricketing history.

Playing against Pakistan in Potchefstroom, Klaas struck gold with a fiery spell that rattled the visiting side. In the space of just three deliveries, she removed Aliya Riaz, Umaima Sohail, and Sidra Nawaz—each dismissal a testament to her accuracy and ability to generate bounce and movement.

Her hat-trick played a crucial role in restricting Pakistan and highlighted the growing depth in South Africa’s bowling attack. Klaas’ feat not only thrilled the home crowd but also reinforced her status as a dependable pace option for the Proteas.

With South Africa already out of the race for the final, Tryon ensured the team didn’t leave empty-handed. She delivered a stunning spell that culminated in a memorable hat-trick—sending Dewmi Vihanga, Sugandika Kumari, and Malki Madara back in quick succession.

Each dismissal came at a critical moment in Sri Lanka’s innings, sealing a rare and emphatic win for her side. Tryon’s hat-trick was a perfect blend of control, aggression, and cricketing intelligence, and it added a historic chapter to her already impressive career.
