As the cricketing calendar intensifies, England are set to host India in a pivotal five-match Test series beginning June 20. This high-profile contest, which comes at a transitional phase for the Indian team, carries immense significance for both sides. For England, it’s about building crucial momentum ahead of the Ashes; for India, it’s about navigating a new chapter under fresh leadership following the retirement of Rohit Sharma from the longest format.
James Anderson warns England against underestimating India’s Test prowess
Former English pacer James Anderson, while speaking to TalkSport, issued a strong message to England, warning them not to get carried away by thoughts of the Ashes and overlook the immediate threat that India poses.
“It’s a huge year with the Ashes coming but it is important to get some momentum going. If I’m being honest, looking back at my career, that happened too much where, 18 months out from an Ashes the management and even the players starting to look towards that and actually forgetting what’s in front of you. India is going to be such a tough challenge even at home. They are a strong side,” said Anderson.
Referring to the absence of two modern-day legends—Rohit and Virat Kohli, Anderson paid rich tributes to the duo while acknowledging their immense contributions to Indian Test cricket.
“Great players. There will be a new captain because Sharma has retired. Kohli, one of the greatest Test batters that’s ever been. There’s big shoes to fill there but they’ve got a huge amount of talent in their squad,” added Anderson.

India’s new era: Leadership shift and tactical rebuild
With Rohit and Kohli now retired from Tests, India face a significant shift in leadership and strategy. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is yet to announce the Indian squad and their new Test captain, but the mantle is expected to fall on one of the younger core members, signaling a generational transition.
The new leadership will not only need to fill the void left by two stalwarts but also tackle the challenges of maintaining India’s formidable home record and grooming a relatively young side for the rigours of red-ball cricket. Despite these obstacles, India remain formidable at home, backed by a strong bowling unit and promising young batters who have shown potential across formats.
