The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has appointed former New Zealand fast bowler Tim Southee as a Specialist Skills Consultant for the England men’s team. Southee, New Zealand’s all-time leading wicket-taker, will work with England’s squads across all formats for the duration of the home summer, culminating with the much-anticipated five-Test series against India.
Tim Southee set to bolster England’s bowling resource
Southee will officially link up with the England camp ahead of their international season opener – a one-off Test against Zimbabwe. His short-term consultancy role will see him closely involved with the team throughout a packed summer schedule, which includes white-ball fixtures against the West Indies and the high-profile Test series against India, beginning June 20 at Headingley, Leeds.
The ECB’s decision to bring in Southee is seen as a strategic move to bolster England’s bowling resources with world-class expertise. Southee retired from international cricket in December 2024, capping a remarkable career that spanned 107 Tests, 161 ODIs, and 126 T20Is, amassing 776 wickets across formats. He is the only pacer to have played 100 matches in each format and remains the only bowler to have claimed at least 300 Test, 200 ODI, and 100 T20I wickets. His international experience, particularly in seam and swing-friendly conditions, is expected to be invaluable for England’s quicks as they prepare for challenging assignments.
Southee will represent Birmingham Phoenix after completing his stint with England
Southee will be working alongside England head coach Brendon McCullum, his former New Zealand teammate, in a partnership that is already drawing attention for its potential impact.
After completing his stint with England, Southee will return to his playing duties in The Hundred, representing Birmingham Phoenix. His dual commitments underline the short-term nature of his consultancy but also reflect the growing trend of international stars transitioning into specialist coaching and mentorship roles.
