England put on a commanding show in the opening ODI against West Indies at Edgbaston, Birmingham, registering a mammoth 238-run victory to go 1-0 up in the series. While the scoreboard told a story of dominance with bat and ball, the moment that stole the limelight came in the field — a jaw-dropping one-handed catch by Brydon Carse that sent West Indies captain Shai Hope back to the pavilion.
Brydon Carse’s acrobatic brilliance leaves crowd in awe
The 12th over of West Indies’ chase brought an electrifying moment. Saqib Mahmood steamed in and delivered a sharp bouncer aimed at Hope’s body. The Caribbean skipper instinctively pulled, connecting well — or so it seemed. Positioned at deep square leg, Carse was initially running in, but adjusted quickly to leap sideways and pluck the ball mid-air with just one hand. The catch was a stunner, instantly drawing comparisons to Ben Stokes‘ iconic grab from the 2019 World Cup. Even Mahmood stood still in disbelief, stunned by what he had just witnessed.

England go 1-0 up with dominating win in Edgbaston
After being asked to bat first, England turned the Edgbaston turf into a batting paradise. The top order fired collectively, with Ben Duckett (60), Joe Root (57), and captain Harry Brook (58) laying the foundation. However, it was Jacob Bethell who delivered the knockout blow, smashing a blistering 82 off just 53 balls. His aggressive strokeplay, peppered with 8 boundaries and 5 towering sixes, ensured England crossed the 400-mark, finishing at 400/8 in 50 overs.
Chasing an uphill target, West Indies faltered right from the beginning. None of the batters could settle in, with wickets tumbling at regular intervals. Their innings folded for just 162 runs in 26.2 overs. Jamie Overton and Saqib Mahmood spearheaded the attack with three wickets apiece, breaking the visitors’ backbone and sealing the lopsided contest.
