On a dew-soaked evening in Mullanpur, in a high-stakes Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 Eliminator, it took something extraordinary to halt Gujarat Titans’ charging momentum. And it came from none other than Jasprit Bumrah. The 31-year-old spearhead of the Mumbai Indians bowling attack once again proved why he is regarded as one of the best death bowlers in world cricket.

Jasprit Bumrah’s brutal yorker puts a full stop to Washington Sundar’s fightback

Bowling the 14th over with Gujarat threatening to overhaul a massive 229-run target, Bumrah unleashed a searing yorker that speared between Washington Sundar’s legs and crashed into the base of the stumps. It wasn’t just a wicket, it was the moment that reignited MI’s grip on the match. Sundar, batting fluently on 48 off just 24 deliveries, was just two short of what would have been his maiden IPL fifty. The delivery was clinical: full, fast, dipping, and perfectly aimed at the base of the toes. As Sundar tried to jam his bat down in time, the ball sneaked through, knocking back the leg stump and halting an electrifying partnership.

Before Bumrah’s intervention, Gujarat were well on track to pull off the improbable. Chasing 229, they had recovered from the early loss of captain Shubman Gill, who fell lbw to Trent Boult in the very first over for just 1, thanks to a counter-attacking second-wicket stand between Sudharsan and Kusal Mendis. The duo added 64 runs in quick time, setting the foundation for what followed. Once Mendis departed, Sundar walked in with clear intent. He took on the MI bowlers from the outset, finding gaps, clearing the boundary ropes, and rotating strike effortlessly. Alongside Sudharsan, he added 84 runs in just 44 balls for the third wicket.

After Sundar’s dismissal, all eyes turned to Sudharsan, the southpaw who had anchored GT’s innings. The 2022 finalists needed someone to bat deep, and Sudharsan looked the part. His innings was a perfect blend of composure and aggression, 80 runs off 49 deliveries, including elegant drives, flicks, and clever manipulations of the field. But pressure mounted rapidly in the final stretch, and Richard Gleeson struck a vital blow, bowling Sudharsan and all but ending GT’s hopes. From 193/4 at the end of the 18th over, Gujarat needed 36 off 12 balls, a steep ask even for the finishing prowess of Sherfane Rutherford and Rahul Tewatia.

However in the end, Mumbai held their nerve in a high-pressure contest to secure a 20-run win over Gujarat and advance to Qualifier 2. The five-time champions showcased their experience, temperament, and firepower when it mattered most. With both bat and ball, MI delivered a clinical performance despite facing serious resistance from GT’s middle-order duo. They now head to Ahmedabad, where they will face Punjab Kings (PBKS) on June 1 (Sunday). The winner of that contest will lock horns with the in-form Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the IPL 2025 Final on June 3 (Tuesday).
