The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad witnessed a dramatic and unsettling moment during the IPL 2025 encounter between Gujarat Titans (GT) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on May 22. While the match was packed with power-hitting and high stakes, it was a fierce straight drive from Shubman Gill that stole the spotlight for all the wrong reasons, leaving LSG pacer Akash with a severe hand injury and heavy bleeding.
Shubman Gill’s ferocious strike injures Akash Singh’s hand during GT vs LSG
The incident unfolded in the final over of the powerplay, with GT chasing a daunting 236-run target set by LSG. Akash, bowling around the wicket to GT skipper Gill, delivered a ball that was met with a textbook straight drive. Gill’s shot, timed to perfection, rocketed back towards the bowler. Akash instinctively put out his right hand to stop the ball, but the forceful impact split the webbing of his fingers, causing immediate and profuse bleeding.
The severity of the injury was evident as Akash’s hand was quickly wrapped in a large towel and he was forced to walk off the field, leaving Avesh Khan to complete the over. The LSG medical team rushed in to provide urgent assistance, highlighting the often-overlooked dangers faced by bowlers in the line of fire.
Despite the pain and the ugly scene on the field, Akash’s resilience shone through. After receiving treatment and having his hand heavily strapped, he returned to the field, determined to contribute to his team’s cause. Remarkably, he managed to bowl another over and even claimed the crucial wicket of Jos Buttler, celebrating with Digvesh Rathi’s signature notebook gesture, though he was visibly uncomfortable throughout his run-up.

LSG end their losing streak of IPL 2025 against GT
The match itself was a high-octane affair, with LSG posting a mammoth 235 in the first innings, powered by Mitchell Marsh’s explosive 117 and Nicholas Pooran’s quickfire 56. GT, already assured of a playoff berth and sitting atop the points table with 18 points, were eager to cement their dominance in front of a passionate home crowd. However the hosts fell 33 runs short of the target ending LSG’s horrifying losing streak in the IPL 2025.
For LSG, already out of playoff contention, the game was about pride and finishing the season on a high. The Akash incident, however, underscored the unpredictable and perilous nature of T20 cricket, where moments of brilliance and bravery often come at a physical cost.
