Indian cricket is at a crossroads following Rohit Sharma’s sudden announcement to retire from Test cricket. Rohit, who had been a stabilizing force in the red-ball setup after Virat Kohli stepped down, played a pivotal role in guiding India through a transitional phase. His leadership in high-pressure series, including against Australia and England, and in the World Test Championship, was instrumental. With his unexpected exit from the longest format, the race has now begun to find his rightful successor.

Nasser Hussain picks the next Indian skipper in Tests

Amid the growing chatter about who will take over the reins, former England captain Nasser Hussain has made a strong case for young batting prodigy Shubman Gill. In a recent statement, Hussain admitted he was surprised by Rohit’s sudden retirement but believes Gill could be the ideal candidate to lead India into a new era of Test cricket.

“If Bumrah does not become India’s next Test captain, then Shubman Gill can definitely become India’s next Test captain. KL Rahul is also in the queue but Gill seems to be the favorite,” said Hussain, signaling a vote of confidence in the 24-year-old.

While Jasprit Bumrah’s name continues to dominate conversations due to his leadership stints and current role as vice-captain, Hussain sees Gill’s temperament, youth, and experience across conditions as key attributes for long-term leadership. KL Rahul, with his previous leadership experiences and calm demeanor, also remains a strong contender, but according to Hussain, Gill is leading the race.

India’s next Test assignment — a high-stakes five-match series against England beginning June 20 at Headingley, Leeds — will mark the beginning of a new chapter. The leadership decision, expected to be announced in the coming weeks, will not only impact this series but could also set the tone for India’s campaign in the ongoing WTC cycle.

Gill has already been seen as a future leader by many in the cricketing fraternity. With centuries in Australia, England, and India, he has proved his credentials with the bat. Now, if given the captaincy, it will be a defining step in his evolution as a cricketer.
