Legendary Australian wicketkeeper-batter Adam Gilchrist recently sat down for an exclusive interview with Sushant Mehta, founder of Sports Yaari. Known for his fearless strokeplay and sharp cricketing acumen, Gilchrist offered candid insights into the modern game during a rapid-fire segment that featured some of the toughest comparison questions in contemporary cricket. The conversation, although informal, carried weight due to the stature of the players discussed, and Gilchrist didn’t hold back in sharing his opinions with complete honesty.
Not MS Dhoni! Adam Gilchrist picks his all-format captain
Sushant Mehta posed a compelling question to Gilchrist: “Dhoni or Pat Cummins? Your captain, all-format captain. Who would you choose?” After a brief moment of deep reflection, Gilchrist responded with honesty and clarity. “All-format captain? I’ll go with Pat Cummins,” he said. The decision didn’t come easy, considering that both MS Dhoni and Pat Cummins are World Cup-winning captains and proven leaders. However, Gilchrist eventually leaned towards Cummins, who recently led Australia to ICC titles in both the World Test Championship and the ODI World Cup 2023. The choice showcased Gilchrist’s recognition of Cummins’ modern-day leadership, calm temperament, and success across formats in the current high-intensity cricketing landscape.

Gilchrist chooses the more consistent batter than Rohit Sharma
When asked to choose between two Indian batting greats, Rohit Sharma or Virat Kohli, for the title of the best all-format batter, Gilchrist didn’t hesitate for long. “I think Virat. Just because over a sustained period, he showed it across all formats. Virat Kohli,” the Australian legend said. Gilchrist’s endorsement of Kohli speaks volumes, especially coming from one of the most respected voices in the cricketing world. While Rohit has been phenomenal in white-ball cricket, particularly in ODIs and T20Is, Gilchrist emphasized Kohli’s longevity and adaptability across Tests, ODIs, and T20s, attributes that define a truly complete batter in the modern era.
This assessment is rooted in facts. Over the past decade, Kohli has been a run-machine in Tests, ODIs, and T20Is, maintaining form and fitness through changing formats and evolving bowling attacks. Gilchrist’s choice underscores Kohli’s consistency, adaptability, and mental resilience. While Rohit has enjoyed tremendous success, particularly in white-ball cricket with five IPL titles and multiple double centuries in ODIs, Kohli’s all-round dominance, especially in Tests overseas, gives him the edge in Gilchrist’s view.
