In a significant move ahead of a busy cricketing calendar, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has named a new captain for the national ODI team. The decision comes as the board continues its strategic reshuffle in leadership roles across formats. While Najmul Hossain Shanto remains in charge of the Test side, the BCB has handed over the reins of the 50-over format to a promising leader with an eye on long-term stability.
Star all-rounder to lead Bangladesh ODI side for the next 12 months
Star all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz has been appointed as Bangladesh’s new ODI captain for the next 12 months, starting with the upcoming three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka next month. The 26-year-old replaces Shanto, who will continue as the Test skipper, while Litton Das remains in charge of the T20I squad—marking a three-captain structure for the national side across formats.
This isn’t Mehidy’s first stint in leadership. He previously captained Bangladesh in four ODIs in 2023 when Shanto was injured, although the side ended up on the losing side in all four matches. Despite those results, Mehidy’s all-round performances and maturity on the field have kept him in the leadership radar. With 105 ODIs to his name, Mehidy is one of only four Bangladeshi players to have scored 1000+ runs and taken 100 wickets in the format.

BCB looks ahead to 2027 World Cup as new skipper expresses pride in captaincy role
The BCB’s decision to appoint Mehidy as ODI captain signals a long-term vision, especially with the 2027 ODI World Cup in focus. Bangladesh are currently ranked 10th in the ICC ODI rankings and must climb into the top eight to secure automatic qualification for the global tournament. Under Shanto’s leadership, Bangladesh registered four wins in 13 ODIs since 2023, including a series victory over Sri Lanka but also suffered defeats to Afghanistan and New Zealand.
“It is a huge honour for me to be entrusted with this responsibility by the board. Leading the country is a dream for any cricketer and I am grateful for the confidence the board has shown in me. I have every faith in this team. We have the talent and the belief to play fearless cricket. I want us to perform with confidence, play without inhibition and continue giving our best for the country,” said Mehidy in a official statement.
