Day 3 of the first Test between England and India at Headingley saw standout performances from KL Rahul and Jasprit Bumrah, helping India maintain a slender advantage in a tightly contested match.

Jasprit Bumrah’s five-for leads the way

India began the day looking to wrap up England’s first innings, and Bumrah delivered a brilliant spell, claiming a five-wicket haul to bowl out England for 465. Bumrah’s incisive bowling proved crucial as he dismissed key English batters, including centurion Ollie Pope, who fell early in the morning session for 106. Bumrah’s figures ensured India secured a narrow first-innings lead of six runs, despite England’s lower order adding valuable runs through Harry Brook’s aggressive 99 and contributions from Chris Woakes and Brydon Carse.

KL Rahul anchors India’s second innings

In response, India’s second innings faced early pressure after losing Yashasvi Jaiswal cheaply. However, Rahul steadied the ship with a composed knock, forming a crucial 66-run partnership with debutant Sai Sudharsan. Rahul’s solid technique and temperament were on display as he blunted the English attack under overcast conditions, especially with rain threatening to disrupt play. Sudharsan contributed 30 before falling to Ben Stokes, but Rahul remained resolute, joined by Shubman Gill as India looked to build on their slim lead.

Match poised for thrilling finish

By stumps, rain had brought an early end to proceedings with India leading by 96 runs. The match remains finely balanced, with both sides having seized key moments over the first three days. For India, Bumrah’s five-for and Rahul’s composure have been the highlights, while England’s batting depth has kept them firmly in the contest.

As the Headingley Test heads into Day 4, all eyes will be on whether India’s middle order can extend the lead and if Bumrah can continue his match-defining form with the ball.
