Kevin Pietersen’s strategic advice for Kuldeep Yadav
Kuldeep shed light on the nature of Pietersen’s guidance, which stemmed from their shared time at Delhi Capitals. “Kevin Pietersen was part of our team at DC. He gave me a lot of inputs for the England tour,” the Chinaman bowler revealed. Pietersen’s advice was comprehensive, covering various facets of the game in English conditions. “He told me about fielding positions, pitches and the batsmen,” Kuldeep added, indicating a detailed tactical discussion.
However, the most profound piece of advice revolved around the psychological approach spinners often adopt in England. Pietersen, known for his attacking mindset, urged Kuldeep to shed any defensive inhibitions. “Pietersen said that generally, spinners come to England with a defensive mindset. They think that in England, fast bowlers will get wickets and they will be in a supporting role,” Kuldeep explained, recalling their conversation. “He told me to take the field with an attacking mindset. If I get a game and bowl 15 to 20 overs, I have to always think about how to get the batsmen out.” This emphasis on wicket-taking, rather than merely containing, appears to have resonated deeply with the young spinner, potentially offering a crucial competitive edge.
Kuldeep’s hunger for wickets
Kuldeep’s own philosophy aligns perfectly with Pietersen’s attacking counsel. The wrist-spinner unequivocally stated his primary objective for the tour: to claim wickets. For Kuldeep, taking wickets isn’t just a goal; it’s a justification for his presence in the playing XI, especially in conditions often perceived as less conducive for spin. “I don’t know anything other than bowling. If you don’t take wickets, you can’t justify yourself for playing in England,” he asserted, underlining his conviction. “If you don’t take wickets, I don’t think you deserve to play.”
He expressed unwavering faith in his core skills—the ability to impart significant revs on the ball and generate drift, which he believes are his keys to success regardless of the playing surface. Kuldeep drew parallels to his previous success against England in India, where he picked up a five-wicket haul on a relatively flat Dharamshala track. “I know one thing, wherever one is playing, at home or in England. I have to get the revs on the ball and the drift and that will get me wickets,” he confidently stated. Acknowledging the inherent differences, he still believes spinners will be relevant. “England conditions are different but as a spinner, I believe that it won’t be that different. Besides, the way England bat, I think the spinners will be in the game.”
