In the first match of the two-match series, Bangladesh ended Day 4 with a lead of 187 runs, heading into the final day of play. After swiftly wrapping up the Sri Lankan tail in the second session, the visitors batted confidently in the final stretch of the day. Now, once again, the responsibility falls on their middle order to push for a win in what is shaping up to be a potential draw.

Bangladesh build lead as Shadman Islam shines in gritty knock

Coming out to bat with a lead of 10 runs, the visitors faced the crucial task of taking the game away from Sri Lanka. After opener Anamul Haque once again fell early, Shadman Islam and Mominul Haque steadied the ship with a patient stand, before the latter was caught by Lahiru Udara just before Tea.

In the final session, Bangladesh displayed a composed fightback, building two brisk partnerships. Najmul Hossain Shanto, showing admirable temperament and shot selection, remains unbeaten on 56, brilliantly anchoring the innings alongside Mushfiqur Rahim, the centurion from the first innings, he is playing on 22 notout.

Galle Test to enter a thrilling final day

With a day’s play remaining, this can become one of the most captivating sights in Test cricket. The objective for the home side is clear, wrap up Bangladesh’s innings quickly and set themselves up to chase down the target. The day also holds special significance as it marks the last day in international cricket for the legendary Angelo Mathews, and the hosts will be eager to make the occasion memorable.

For Bangladesh, the task is straightforward—extend the lead beyond 300 and put the Sri Lankan batters under pressure with their bowling. While the pitch still appears to be a good surface for batting, taking quick wickets will be a challenge. But in Test cricket, anything can happen—especially with both teams eager to kick off the new World Test Championship (WTC) cycle on a high note.
