The Oakland Coliseum witnessed a cricketing spectacle on June 17, 2025, as Washington Freedom clashed with Los Angeles Knight Riders in the 8th match of Major League Cricket. With both teams seeking crucial points early in the tournament—Washington aiming to build on a mixed start and LAKR desperate for their first win—the stage was set for fireworks. What unfolded was a one-man show, as Glenn Maxwell delivered an unforgettable T20 masterclass, leaving fans in awe and propelling Washington Freedom to a thumping 113-run victory.

Glenn Maxwell’s explosive ton ignites MLC 2025 showdown

Maxwell, captaining Washington Freedom, walked in with his team wobbling at 68/4. The situation demanded composure and flair, and Maxwell delivered both in abundance. Initially cautious, he was 11 off 15 balls before unleashing a breathtaking assault. His unbeaten 106 off just 49 deliveries featured a mere two boundaries but a staggering 13 sixes, showcasing his signature power-hitting and innovative stroke play.

Maxwell’s acceleration was remarkable—his last 95 runs came off just 34 balls. He brought up his eighth T20 century, joining an elite club alongside the likes of Rohit Sharma, David Warner, and Jos Buttler. The landmark moment arrived in the 20th over: a short ball from Jason Holder was pulled high towards deep mid-wicket, and with a couple of runs, Maxwell removed his helmet and celebrated with a flying kiss to the crowd, who responded with a standing ovation.

His innings not only rescued Washington from a precarious position but also powered them to a formidable 208/5. Maxwell’s dominance was especially evident in the death overs, where he plundered runs at will, including a 26-run final over that left LAKR’s bowlers shell-shocked.

Here’s how fans reacted:

Washington Freedom obliterate Los Angeles Knight Riders with a commanding win

Washington’s innings began with a rapid 32 from Mitchell Owen, but early wickets threatened to derail their progress. Maxwell’s partnership with Obus Pienaar (14* off 15) stabilized the innings before the captain’s onslaught turned the tide. The Freedom’s total of 208/5 was always going to be a daunting chase at the Oakland Coliseum, a ground known for high scores but also for rewarding disciplined bowling.

The Los Angeles Knight Riders’ reply never got going. Washington’s bowlers, led by Jack Edwards (3/15), Mitchell Owen (3/18), and Saurabh Netravalkar (2/6), ran through the LAKR lineup. The Knight Riders lost their top three batters—Alex Hales, Sunil Narine, and Unmukt Chand—for ducks, and never recovered from the early collapse. Saif Badar’s 32 was the lone resistance as LAKR were bundled out for just 95 in 16.3 overs, suffering their third consecutive defeat.
