Australian cricket star Glenn Maxwell announced his retirement from One Day International (ODI) cricket on Monday, June 2, marking the end of a remarkable 13-year journey in the 50-over format.
The news has drawn emotional responses from fans and experts of the game. Among the most heartfelt was a tribute from Maxwell’s wife, Vini Raman, who took to social media to express her pride and support for her husband’s illustrious career.
Glenn Maxwell’s ODI legacy
Maxwell, 36, leaves ODI cricket as one of Australia’s most dynamic white-ball players. Across 149 ODIs, he amassed 3,990 runs at a blistering strike rate of 126.70—the highest for any player with over 2,000 ODI runs—and claimed 77 wickets with his off-spin. He played pivotal roles in Australia’s World Cup triumphs in 2015 and 2023, with his unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan in the 2023 World Cup widely hailed as one of the greatest ODI innings ever played.
Announcing his decision, Maxwell cited the physical toll of the format and a desire to make way for the next generation. “I felt like I was letting the team down a little bit with how my body was reacting to the conditions,” Maxwell explained, referencing ongoing injury struggles since 2022. He revealed a candid conversation with selector George Bailey where he admitted he was unlikely to make it to the 2027 World Cup and wanted to give others a chance to own the role.
Vini Raman’s heartfelt post for her retiring husband
Shortly after Maxwell’s announcement, Vini Raman shared a touching post on Instagram, celebrating her husband’s achievements and resilience. She praised his selflessness in stepping aside for the team’s future and reflected on the sacrifices and challenges faced throughout his career.

“An extraordinary ODI career. Forever be my star,” she wrote on Maxwell picture in the Australian jersey, along with three red hearts.

Raman’s Instagram story resonated with fans, highlighting the personal side of a professional athlete’s journey—a perspective she has often shared, notably after Maxwell’s historic double century in the 2023 World Cup.
Although Maxwell’s ODI chapter has closed, he remains committed to T20 internationals, with his sights set on the 2026 T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka. He will also continue to play in the Big Bash League (BBL) and other domestic competitions.
