Veteran Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who is currently leading the Dindigul Dragons in the 2025 edition of the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL), found himself in the midst of controversy during a high-voltage clash against Tirupur Tamizhans on Sunday.
Ravichandran Ashwin’s on-field frustration cost him big in the TNPL 2025
The dramatic incident unfolded in the fifth over of Dragons’ innings, when Ashwin attempted a sweep shot against Sai Kishore, the left-arm spinner from the Tamizhans. Ashwin, who had already struck two boundaries and a six, misjudged the line and missed the ball completely. The on-field umpire wasted no time in raising his finger, ruling Ashwin out LBW. The Dindigul captain, visibly frustrated by the decision, engaged in a brief but pointed argument with the umpire. As he walked back toward the dugout after scoring 18 off 11 deliveries, Ashwin struck his bat on the ground in anger, a gesture that attracted further scrutiny.
Now, according to the Cricbuzz report, the 38-year-old cricketer was penalized for showing dissent toward an umpiring decision and for subsequently slamming his bat after being adjudged leg-before wicket (LBW), actions that were deemed violations of the league’s code of conduct. Ashwin was fined 10 percent of his match fee for dissent and an additional 20 percent for misuse of equipment, as confirmed by TNPL officials. A post-match disciplinary hearing was conducted by the match referee, during which Ashwin accepted the sanctions without protest.
“There was a hearing conducted by the match referee after the game. Ashwin was fined 10 per cent for showing dissent towards the umpires and 20 per cent for misuse of equipment. He accepted the sanctions,” a TNPL official was quoted as saying by the Cricbuzz.

Consequences for Dindigul Dragons after Ashwin’s exit
Ashwin’s dismissal proved to be the turning point in the innings for Dragons. From a strong position at 39 for no loss, the side suffered an astonishing collapse, eventually being bowled out for a paltry 93 runs in just 16.2 overs. None of the batters could withstand the pressure after the early breakthrough, and the team’s middle and lower order capitulated without offering any resistance. The Tamizhans, riding high on momentum, chased down the modest target of 94 in just 9.1 overs, winning the game by nine wickets in a completely one-sided affair. Following this defeat, the Dragons currently sit fifth on the TNPL 2025 points table, having secured one win and suffered one loss in their first two matches. The Chepauk Super Gillies lead the standings with two wins from two games and are in prime form with four points.
