From Pataudi to Tendulkar-Anderson: The evolution of the Trophy name

Traditionally known as the Pataudi Trophy, the bilateral Test series between England and India honoured Tiger Pataudi, a unique figure who represented both nations. However, in a momentous change, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially renamed the series the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy. This decision celebrates the monumental contributions of Tendulkar, the game’s most prolific battle, and Anderson, the most successful fast bowler in Test history. The move not only signifies respect between the two cricketing giants but also passes the torch of legacy to future generations, who will now compete for a trophy steeped in excellence and mutual admiration.

Reacting to the announcement during a DP World event at Lord’s, Anderson, who made his England debut in 2003 and has since become a cornerstone of their bowling attack, called it a “huge honour”. Speaking to ESPNCricinfo, the 41-year-old reminisced about watching Tendulkar during his formative years and further called him absolute legend of the game.

I remember watching him, an absolute legend of the game, and I played against him a lot as well. So to have this trophy is a huge honour for me, and I couldn’t be more proud,” Anderson was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

The much-anticipated five-match Test series between India and England is set to commence on June 20 at Headingley, Leeds, and will be the first edition to be played for the newly named Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy.
