Virat Kohli, one of the modern-day greats of Indian cricket, has left an indelible mark on the Test format with his fierce competitiveness, run-scoring prowess, and ability to lead from the front. His absence from India’s current Test tour of England—set to begin on June 20 under Shubman Gill‘s captaincy—marks the beginning of a new era. With Kohli stepping back from the red-ball format, India now faces the monumental task of finding a worthy successor who can carry forward his legacy in the longest format of the game.

Kohli’s contribution to Indian Test cricket goes beyond his 9,000+ runs. He redefined India’s overseas success, instilled fitness culture, and built a team that could win in all conditions. His retirement has created a leadership and performance vacuum, sparking debate over who could possibly fill his shoes.

Monty Panesar picks the next big thing in Indian cricket

While Gill has often been touted as Kohli’s natural successor—both in terms of batting flair and leadership qualities—not everyone agrees. Former England spinner Monty Panesar has named a different young talent as India’s next Test superstar: the uncapped Sai Sudharsan.

Speaking to InsideSport, Panesar said, “Yes, there are some really talented youngsters in the team, and one batsman in particular stands out, Sai Sudharsan, who played for Surrey as an overseas player. He is very aggressive, fearless, and has done well in English conditions.”

Panesar believes Sudharsan, despite not having played Test cricket yet, has the qualities required to carry forward Kohli’s legacy.

“I believe he has the potential to become the next big star of Indian cricket,” Panesar added, backing the left-hander to make a mark in the near future.

Young Indian squad looks to shine in England

India’s tour of England, led by a relatively young squad and helmed by Shubman Gill, brings with it a wave of expectations. With both Kohli and Rohit Sharma stepping away from the longest format, the spotlight now turns to the next generation. This series is being seen as a litmus test for India’s emerging talents—an opportunity to cement their place and prove they can thrive in challenging English conditions.

While the team will surely miss Kohli’s experience and aura, the tour opens the door for players like Sudharsan—if given a chance—to make their presence felt. Whether or not Sudharsan gets the Test cap soon, Panesar’s prediction has certainly ignited fresh discussion about the future of Indian batting and who truly deserves to be called the next Kohli.
