As the cricketing world prepares to witness the end of an era, Sri Lanka stalwart Angelo Mathews is playing his farewell Test match against Bangladesh in Galle. Having donned the whites for his nation 118 times, Mathews took the field for the 119th and final time in the format, capping off a remarkable career that has seen him become one of Sri Lanka’s greatest all-rounders. With tributes pouring in from across the globe, one message stands out: Indian cricket legend Rohit Sharma’s emotional words for his long-time friend and rival.
Rohit Sharma’s emotional message for Angelo Mathews
Rohit, who himself retired from Test cricket just a month ago, shared a touching message for Mathews ahead of the latter’s final Test. Their journey together began in the U-19 circuit, where both showed early signs of greatness. Over the years, they have faced off on numerous occasions, forging a bond built on mutual respect and fierce competition.
“Hey Angi, congratulations on your fantastic career. Over the years we had some pretty good battles from our under-19 days to now. You’ve been a true servant for your nation and I’m pretty sure everyone back at home appreciates what you’ve done for your country,” Rohit said, encapsulating the camaraderie and admiration that defines their relationship.
Unlike Mathews, Rohit did not get a farewell Test match, having dropped himself from the playing XI in his final series against Australia. His sudden retirement took many by surprise, but he continues to serve Indian cricket in ODIs. In contrast, Mathews has been granted the opportunity to bid adieu on his own terms, a testament to his enduring legacy in Sri Lankan cricket.

Mathews’ last stand: A career etched in glory
Mathews’ Test career is a tapestry of grit, elegance, and resilience. With over 8,000 runs, 16 centuries, and 45 half-centuries, Mathews has been the backbone of Sri Lanka’s batting lineup for more than a decade. His 8167 runs and 33 wickets in 118 Tests highlight his value as a genuine all-rounder, and his leadership has guided Sri Lanka through some of its most challenging phases.
As he prepares for his final Test, Mathews remains focused on finishing strong. “There are six more months until the next T20 World Cup, and I’ll give it a try depending on what my body tells me. I hope to retire from white-ball cricket at that World Cup. If we can win another World Cup, I’ll try to contribute toward that. So I’ll do everything I can to improve my fitness and skills over the next six months,” Mathews shared, underscoring his commitment to Sri Lankan cricket even as he transitions away from the longest format.
