The rebranding of historic England-India Test series trophy has sparked a fresh wave of criticism — and this time, it’s from one of Indian cricket’s most respected voices. Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has openly questioned the decision to name the newly unveiled ‘Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy’ in that specific order, replacing the Pataudi Trophy which had been in place since 2007.

The new name aims to honour England’s highest wicket-taker James Anderson and India’s batting legend Sachin Tendulkar, but Gavaskar believes the order is not just disrespectful to Indian fans — it’s historically inaccurate.

Sunil Gavaskar disapproves of James Anderson’s name taking precedence

In his latest Mid-Day column, Gavaskar shared his disappointment, highlighting how the decision feels out of touch with Indian cricket followers. He stressed that while both players are legends in their own right, Tendulkar’s contributions to the game — across both Test and ODI formats — far outweigh Anderson’s, especially when viewed from a global perspective.

“The ECB is fully entitled to call the series by any name they choose. But for most, if not all, Indian cricket lovers, it is jarring to know that Anderson’s name comes first,” wrote Gavaskar.

Gavaskar highlights stark contrast between the two icons

Gavaskar didn’t stop at voicing discomfort with the name order — he backed it with stats and achievements. Tendulkar, the first cricketer to score 100 international centuries and the highest run-scorer in both Tests and ODIs, also holds the distinction of being part of a World Cup-winning Indian team in 2011.

Anderson, though a great fast bowler, has achieved most of his success in home conditions and has not replicated the same level of impact overseas or in white-ball cricket.

“Anderson is third in the list of wicket-takers in Test cricket. His record is impressive, but he doesn’t come close to Tendulkar in the ODI format. Tendulkar’s influence on the global game is unmatched,” Gavaskar added.

Gavaskar urges Indian supporters to reverse trophy title

In a passionate appeal, Gavaskar urged the Indian cricketing community to unofficially rename the series in a way that gives proper respect to Tendulkar’s legacy. He wrote: “I urge all Indian cricket lovers, including the Indian media, to call it the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy”
