Following the conclusion of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, the spotlight now firmly shifts to the national team, which stands at the cusp of a significant transitional phase. India faces a unique scenario, heading into an intriguing period with distinct leadership across its three cricketing formats.

While One-Day International cricket continues to hold importance, considerable attention will also be directed towards the Test and T20I arenas. India are set to commence their 2025-27 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle, simultaneously ramping up preparations for the T20 World Cup scheduled for 2026. This packed schedule will see the team undertake challenging tours to both England and Australia, in addition to hosting four international sides on home soil.

Before the next IPL season in 2026, Team India is poised for a substantial workload, with nine Test matches, 12 ODIs and a minimum of 22 to 27 T20 Internationals on their calendar. Adding to the complexity, an Asia Cup (in T20 format) is slated, though its status currently remains uncertain due to India-Pakistan tension across the border.

In a pivotal leadership change, Shubman Gill is all set to take the reins of the Indian Test team, starting with the series against England on June 20. Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav, who was appointed India’s T20I captain last year, has impressed with his near-flawless performance. He is widely expected to lead the side in the 2026 T20 World Cup, where India will aim to defend their title on home turf. Rohit Sharma, for now, continues to lead the ODI team and expects to play the 50-over format until the 2027 World Cup.
