Indian young sensation Tilak Varma once again came into the limelight not for a quick knock, but for a century in the longest and toughest format of the game. Tilak scored a patient century on his County Championship debut showing remarkable grit and technique, becoming only the fourth Indian to achieve this feat.

Tilak Varma scores gritty century on County Championship debut

Playing his first match for Hampshire in the famous County tournament, Tilak came to bat at number four for his side with a big responsibility on his shoulders as his team was struggling at 96 for 3 against Essex. Tilak showed a very calm temperament with solid technique and chose to attack at the right moments to help his team recover well.

He scored a phenomenal 100 runs in 241 deliveries, which included 14 fours and 3 sixes, impressing everyone watching. He stitched a crucial 133-run partnership with Liam Dawson to help his side gain a lead of 157 runs in the second innings of the match. His innings was eventually ended by Protea spinner Simon Harmer, but Tilak’s debut century made a strong statement about his ability.

Tilak’s promising numbers in First Class cricket

Tilak has been a backbone of Indian T20I middle over in past one year. The 22-year-old known for his sheer timing and explosive knocks in the shortest forma of the game. He has also played several memorable innings with the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the IPL. However, Tilak has also got some promising numbers in First-Class cricket.

In domestic first-class cricket, Tilak has appeared in 18 matches so far. He has scored a total of 1,204 runs in 25 innings, with a remarkable average of 50.16. He also has five centuries and four half-centuries to his name, with a best score of 121 runs. However, the left-hander is still waiting for his international debut in whites, but this innings has definitely helped boost his confidence in achieving that goal.
