As Team India readies itself for a challenging five-match Test series against England, the spotlight has shifted from familiar stalwarts to a new generation. In this moment of transition, newly appointed head coach Gautam Gambhir delivered a rousing address, urging his players to embrace the opportunity before them rather than lament the absence of their legendary predecessors.
Gautam Gambhir delivers a powerful team talk ahead of ENG vs IND 2025 Tests
In a video released by the BCCI, Gambhir’s message was clear and uncompromising. He acknowledged the void left by Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin, whose combined experience of nearly 300 Tests is irreplaceable, but challenged the squad to view this not as a setback, but as a “phenomenal opportunity to do something special for the country,”
“There are two ways of looking at this. One is that we are without our three most experienced players, or we have a phenomenal opportunity to do something special for the country. When I look around this group, I think there’s hunger, passion, and the commitment to do something special. If we make sacrifices, if we come out of our comfort zones, if we start fighting, not every day, but every session, every hour, every ball, I think we can have a memorable tour. Make sure we start that from today only. We start enjoying playing for the country because there’s no bigger honour,” Gambhir said during the team meeting.
Gambhir’s words resonated deeply within a squad that is both youthful and ambitious. With Gill at the helm and new faces like Sai Sudharsan and Karun Nair returning to the fold, the team is eager to write its own chapter in Indian cricket history. The coach’s emphasis on sacrifice, unity, and relentless effort set the tone for what promises to be a fiercely contested series.

The start of a new era in Tests for India
The retirements of Kohli, Rohit, and Ashwin have left a leadership and experience vacuum, but they have also paved the way for fresh talent to step up. Gambhir, who has been vocal about ending the “star culture” and fostering a team-first mentality, sees this as the dawn of a new era.
India’s inexperienced batting unit is set to face a stern test as they gear up for a five-match Test series against England, beginning June 20 at Headingley in Leeds, which will also mark the start of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle. The second Test will be played at Edgbaston in Birmingham from July 2, followed by the third encounter at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground starting July 10. Both teams will then benefit from a nine-day break before the fourth Test kicks off at Old Trafford in Manchester on July 23. The high-stakes series will draw to a close at Kennington Oval in London, with the fifth and final Test set to define early momentum in the new WTC cycle.
