The sixth match of the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) 2025 between Chepauk Super Gillies and Nellai Royal Kings at the SNR College Cricket Ground in Coimbatore on June 9 delivered high-octane cricket and a moment that left fans and players stunned. Chepauk Super Gillies, riding on a dominant batting display, posted a formidable total and eventually clinched a 41-run win, but the night’s most dramatic scene came early in the powerplay, courtesy of a shattering blow—literally—by K Aashiq.
Emmanuel Cherian’s delivery shatters K Aashiq’s bat into halves
It was the kind of incident that cricket fans talk about for years. During the powerplay, Chepauk opener Aashiq was facing right-arm pacer Emmanuel Cherian, who steamed in with a length delivery. Aashiq, a left-hander known for his aggressive intent, shaped up to loft the ball towards long-on. What followed was pure theatre: the ball struck the bat with such force that the willow split cleanly into two halves. As the crowd gasped, one half of the bat went flying towards Cherian, narrowly missing the bowler, while the other remained in Aashiq’s hands. The ball itself trickled towards extra cover, where Arun Karthik collected it, but all eyes were on the shattered bat and the stunned players.
This rare occurrence did not deter Aashiq’s focus. He went on to anchor the Super Gillies’ innings with a composed 54 off 38 balls, peppering the boundary seven times and clearing it once, before falling in the 14th over. His resilience after the incident set the tone for Chepauk’s imposing total.

After being put in to bat by Nellai Royal Kings, Chepauk Super Gillies capitalized on a batting-friendly surface. Aashiq and captain Baba Aparajith stitched together a crucial partnership, with Aparajith contributing a brisk 41. The real fireworks came from Swapnil Singh, whose 45 from just 14 balls (including five sixes) propelled Chepauk past the 200-run mark. Vijay Shankar’s unbeaten 47 off 24 balls ensured the Super Gillies finished strongly at 212/7 in their 20 overs.
Nellai Royal Kings, in pursuit of a daunting 213, lost wickets at regular intervals despite a fighting 51 from skipper Karthik and a late surge by Muhammed Adnan Khan (48 off 27). Swapnil Singh shone with the ball as well, picking up two wickets, while Abhishek Tanwar’s three-wicket haul kept Nellai in check. Ultimately, the Royal Kings could only muster 171/9, falling short by 41 runs as Chepauk celebrated a comprehensive victory.
