Australia are on the verge of receiving a major boost ahead of the second Test against West Indies, as seasoned batter Steve Smith is expected to rejoin the squad by Sunday. This update comes after the Aussies secured a commanding win in the opening match of the two-Test series at Barbados.

Par Cummins offers update on Steve Smith’s recovery

Captain Pat Cummins, addressing the media after the team’s 159-run win in the first Test, revealed that Smith has made promising progress in his recovery from a dislocated finger. The injury, sustained during the World Test Championship Final, had ruled him out of the Barbados Test, leading him to continue his rehabilitation in New York.

“He’s had a few hits over in New York, which I think was with a tennis ball and an incredi-ball. I think his wound is looking good, so the next stage is to come over here and hit some balls in the nets. So we’ll know more over the next few days,” said Cummins in the post-match presser.

Australia’s top order wobbles in Smith’s absence

Despite the victory, Australia’s batting vulnerabilities were exposed in the first Test without Smith anchoring the innings. The top four batters collectively managed little resistance, slumping to 22/3 in the first innings and 65/4 in the second. Smith’s potential return is expected to provide much-needed stability at the top.

The second Test is set to be played at the National Cricket Stadium in Grenada, marking the first-ever Test at the venue. With Australia leading the series 1-0, a win will seal a clean sweep. However, the West Indies will be keen to bounce back and make a statement in this landmark match.

Smith’s return, if possible, could significantly impact Australia’s performance and provide a morale boost as they continue to build momentum in red-ball cricket.
