After an intense opening day of the World Test Championship (WTC) Final 2025 between Australia and South Africa, Steve Smith’s fun reply in the post-day press conference made everyone laugh. Known for his brilliant humour off the field, Smith’s cheeky response to a journalist’s question became the talk of the town on social media, with fans sharing the clip widely.
Steve Smith laughs off soft dismissal to Aiden Markram in hilarious post-match moment
On Day 1 of the WTC Final, Smith got out in a way that surprised many, especially for someone of his calibre. After carefully handling fiery spells from Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen, Smith unexpectedly gave his wicket away to part-time off-spinner Aiden Markram. The ball was wide outside off stump, and Smith reached out for it with little footwork. He edged it, and Jansen, standing at first slip took a juggling catch to dismiss him.
When a journalist asked Smith, “Is there anything you learned from your lesson today, that you might differently when you get to bat in the second innings?”
Smith light-heartedly advised against edging the part-time off-spinner, admitting he was still trying to understand how he managed to get out to that delivery, which was drifting down the slope. He emphasized the importance of playing what’s in front and noted that the pitch might offer more spin as the game progresses.
“Don’t nick the part-time off spinner . (The ball was going) Down the slope, I’m still trying to fathom how I’ve done that. But, yeah, don’t do that. Just play what’s in front of us and, might take a bit more spin as the game wears on,” he said.
Smith on unpredictable bounce at Lord’s pitch on Day 1
Reflecting on the pitch conditions Smith also observed that the bounce was likely to remain unpredictable throughout the match, something already noticeable on the first day. He expressed hope that Australia could grab a few early wickets in the morning, work through South Africa’s batting lineup, and build a lead—calling that the ideal scenario for his team moving forward.
“I think the bounce is going to be variable throughout the game as we’ve seen already on day one. So, yeah, hopefully we can get a few early ones in the morning and sort of go through them and have a bit of a lead. That’s the ideal scenario for us right now,” he added.
Meanwhile, Smith’s brilliant knock of 66 runs from 112 balls played a crucial role in helping Australia go past the 200-run mark in the first innings. The right-hander showcased his trademark backfoot play, executing several elegant strokes that drew praise from both fans and cricket experts alike.
