Team India, under the leadership of Shubman Gill, etched their name in the history books by clinching their first-ever Test victory at Edgbaston, Birmingham. The emphatic win came in their ninth attempt at the venue and was a testament to the side’s all-round dominance. After being put into bat, India piled on a mammoth 587 and followed it up with two devastating bowling performances, reducing England to 84/5 and 83/5 in their two innings respectively. Akash Deep’s ten-wicket haul and Gill’s commanding double century (first innings) and another ton (second innings) led the charge as India sealed the match in style.
Shubman Gill shares a heartwarming reaction after India’s emphatic win
Gill reflected on his approach to the game, stating that while he feels confident with his current form, true satisfaction would come if his performances help India win the series. He emphasized that each day offers new lessons and that he prefers to think like a batter when he’s at the crease, focusing on taking calculated risks and making decisions independently. Gill admitted that captaincy can sometimes hold him back from playing freely, but he strives to maintain a batter’s mindset to ensure he doesn’t miss out on crucial scoring opportunities.
“I’d say I’m feeling comfortable with my game, hopefully if we win the series with my contributions, I’ll feel happier. Everyday is a learning curve for me. Whenever I go out there, I’ve said this before, I just want to play as a batsman and I want to think as a batsman and I want to make my decisions and risk management as a batsman. Sometimes when you are out there and thinking as a captain, you don’t take that risks which I think as a batsman sometimes is necessary,” said Gill after the match.
Gill cherishes the honour of leading India at the iconic Lord’s
Expressing his excitement ahead of the next Test, Gill described the upcoming match at Lord’s as a dream come true. He called it the most iconic cricket stadium in the world and shared how every young cricketer grows up aspiring to play there. For Gill, the opportunity to not just play but to captain India at such a historic venue is an unparalleled honour, making the moment even more special in his cricketing journey.
“Very excited for that (Lord’s Test). Probably the most iconic cricket stadium in the world and as a kid everyone dreams about playing there and I think no bigger honour than to be able to captain your country and lead your team there,” added Gill.
