Day 5 of the fourth Test between England and India at Old Trafford witnessed a gripping battle of nerves, as the visitors looked to steady themselves after the early loss of KL Rahul. With the series on the line and the pitch behaving unpredictably, every run and wicket held immense value. Amidst this tense atmosphere, a dramatic moment unfolded when Indian captain Shubman Gill was struck by a hostile delivery from England skipper Ben Stokes.
Shubman Gill sustains a painful blow by Ben Stokes’ bouncer
The incident occurred on the first ball of the 73rd over when Stokes delivered a short-of-length ball that unexpectedly leapt off the surface, exploiting the uneven bounce of the Old Trafford pitch. Gill, who was well-set and playing with composure, was caught off guard by the sharp lift. The ball first struck his right hand as he tried to fend it off and then ricocheted violently onto the side of his helmet, dislodging a piece of the protective gear.
Gill immediately walked away from the crease, visibly writhing in pain, flinging his bat to the ground in discomfort and frustration. The Indian physio sprinted onto the field to perform mandatory concussion checks and assess any possible hand injury. Meanwhile, Stokes, despite being the aggressor in the moment, approached Gill with genuine concern, checking on his well-being and engaging in a brief conversation as the Indian captain received treatment.
