Jasprit Bumrah, India’s ace fast bowler and arguably the best Test pacer in the world, has found himself at the center of an unexpected controversy ahead of the pivotal fourth Test against England. As speculation intensifies about whether he’ll feature at Old Trafford, former England cricketer has taken a blunt jab at both Bumrah and India’s management, suggesting that the team’s record actually dips when their premier quick leads the attack. With Bumrah’s workload management strategy under the microscope—and India trailing 2-1—this debate has split cricket circles and added another charged layer to an already high-stakes series.

Jasprit Bumrah under scrutiny even after brilliant performances

Bumrah’s sheer presence inspires fear in opponents and hope among Indian fans. Praised for his ability to produce game-turning spells and relentless pressure, Bumrah has picked up five-wicket hauls in both the Headingley and Lord’s Tests this series, yet India lost both. His statistics since debuting in 2018 show a 20-23 win-loss record in 47 Tests, fueling skeptics like David Lloyd to claim India often ends up on the wrong side of the result when he plays.

Former players and analysts have delved into this paradox: How can the world’s No. 1 Test bowler—renowned for his awkward action and ability to unsettle the finest—oversee so many Indian defeats? A key reason cited is that Bumrah often has had to operate without adequate bowling support, leaving him to shoulder an enormous burden. Even when at his devastating best, fielding mishaps and patchy performances from fellow pacers have meant his match-winning efforts go unrewarded. As Bharat Arun, India’s former bowling coach, pointed out, “It is high time other bowlers rally around Bumrah and put their hands up and say ‘let’s do the job for India’”.

Former England cricketer’s sly remark on Bumrah’s presence

India’s approach to Bumrah’s workload remains one of the hottest topics in world cricket. Head coach Gautam Gambhir and the team management made it clear before the England tour: nobody wants to burn out their main weapon, so Bumrah was only penciled in for three of the five Tests. Despite the criticism, the logic is sound enough—since January 2024, Bumrah has bowled more Test overs than any other pacer globally.

But the decision to bench him—particularly in matches like Edgbaston, which India won handsomely with the help of emerging stars Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj—has triggered fierce debate back home and abroad. Critics point to England’s Ben Stokes, who pushes himself for marathon spells without a word of complaint about “workload,” arguing that India may be overly cautious.

It is what they’ve said and what the coach Gautam Gambhir said that he will play three out of the five Tests. So, he’s got a choice. There are two matches to go. He’s played two. If they are true to their words, he should play this next game at Old Trafford. But then, you know, they can manoeuvre that, can’t they? If he plays this next one at Old Trafford and they get a result to make it 2-2, you’d think he’d play at The Oval as well. I’m second-guessing, but I think he’ll play this next game and see where they are. If England go 3-1, he won’t play. But if it’s 2-2, he will play at the Oval,” Lloyd said to TalkSport Cricket.

The mixed results in this series—two losses with Bumrah, a runaway win without—offer ammunition to both sides. Lloyd’s stinging observation that “India lose more when Bumrah plays” may be statistically accurate in the short term, but it ignores the nuances of team dynamics, dropped catches, missed opportunities, and how cricket’s tiniest margins can reshape narratives. What’s clear is that, love him or doubt him, Bumrah’s role remains as central—and as hotly debated—as ever.
