Bangladesh roared back into contention in the T20I series against Sri Lanka, securing a commanding 83-run victory in the second match at Dambulla on Sunday night. This emphatic performance has set the stage for a thrilling decider in Colombo, following a comprehensive all-round display spearheaded by captain Litton Das and a relentless bowling attack that dismantled the hosts.
Bangladesh captain Litton Das leads batting revival
After being put in to bat by Sri Lanka, who won the toss, Bangladesh navigated initial challenges to post a formidable total of 177 for 7 in their allotted 20 overs. The innings was expertly marshalled by skipper Litton Das, who rediscovered his form with a masterful 76 runs from just 50 deliveries. His innings, punctuated by five powerful sixes and boasting a strike rate of 152.00, was a pivotal contribution, especially after Bangladesh suffered early setbacks, losing openers Parvez Hossain Emon and Tanzid Hasan for a mere seven runs within the first two overs. This knock marked Litton’s first T20I half-century in over a year, providing much-needed stability.
Litton forged a crucial 69-run partnership for the third wicket with Towhid Hridoy, effectively steadying the innings. Hridoy played a valuable supporting role, contributing a brisk 31 off 25 balls before his departure in the middle overs. The momentum was not lost, however, as Shamim Hossain took charge in the latter part of the innings. Shamim unleashed a blistering 48 runs from just 27 deliveries, smashing five boundaries and two sixes, propelling Bangladesh well past the 170-run mark. The visitors exhibited remarkable acceleration in the final five overs, adding a crucial 62 runs to present Sri Lanka with a challenging target.

Sri Lanka’s bowlers found it difficult to contain the aggressive Bangladeshi batsmen. Left-arm pacer Binura Fernando was the standout performer for the hosts, claiming 3 wickets for 31 runs, including two vital middle-order scalps. Maheesh Theekshana and Nuwan Thushara each managed to pick up a wicket, but Bangladesh’s late surge left the Sri Lankan attack feeling the pressure.

Sri Lanka’s batting crumbles under pressure
Sri Lanka’s chase unraveled almost immediately, as their top order capitulated under the relentless pressure exerted by the Bangladeshi bowlers. The home side lost four wickets within the powerplay, a blow from which they never truly recovered. Kusal Mendis, who was the star of the previous match, was unfortunately run out in the second over, setting a grim tone. Wickets continued to tumble in quick succession, with Avishka Fernando, Kusal Perera and Charith Asalanka all departing cheaply. By the conclusion of the sixth over, Sri Lanka were in deep trouble, and their hopes of chasing down the target diminished further when the 41-run partnership between Pathum Nissanka and Dasun Shanaka was broken.
Following Nissanka’s dismissal, the lower order offered little resistance, with the last five wickets contributing a mere 23 runs to the total. Bangladesh’s bowlers collectively shared the spoils, with every bowler claiming at least one wicket, showcasing a disciplined and effective team effort. Rishad Hossain delivered the final blow, stumping Binura Fernando in the 16th over to seal a comprehensive victory for Bangladesh. Sri Lanka were bowled out for a paltry 94 runs, marking the second-largest margin of victory at this venue in T20Is.
