Australia have announced their ODI and T20I squads for the upcoming white-ball series against South Africa, setting the stage for an exciting build-up to their home summer. The series begins with T20Is in Darwin on August 10 and 12, followed by the final T20I in Cairns on August 16. Cairns will also host the first ODI on August 19, with the 50-over series wrapping up in Mackay on August 22 and 24.

Mitchell Owen rewarded for explosive T20I debut

The selectors have blended experience with emerging talent, with Mitchell Owen earning his first ODI call-up after a dazzling T20I debut. The hard-hitting all-rounder impressed in the recent T20I series against West Indies, scoring 125 runs at a blistering strike rate of 192.30, including a half-century on debut in Jamaica. His ability to play the middle-order finisher’s role has fast-tracked his rise into the 50-over format.

Key returns and fresh opportunities

Speedster Lance Morris has earned a recall to the ODI setup, bolstering Australia’s pace stocks. Travis Head and Josh Hazlewood also return to both squads after being rested for the West Indies series, while Matt Short is back from a side strain that sidelined him during the T20Is.

Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc will miss both series to manage their workloads ahead of the home summer, with Mitchell Marsh continuing as captain in both white-ball formats. Marnus Labuschagne has retained his spot in the ODI squad after he was left out of the Test team for the Caribbean tour.

Changes from the West Indies series

From the squad that sealed a 5-0 whitewash over West Indies, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Aaron Hardie, Cooper Connolly, and Xavier Bartlett are omitted from the T20I group. However, Bartlett returns for the ODI series. Fraser-McGurk was a late injury replacement and played only one match, while Connolly struggled with scores of 13 and 0 despite contributing a wicket. Hardie, meanwhile, closed out the series strongly, including steering the decisive chase in the final T20I.
