West Indies legend Gordon Greenidge, one of the most feared openers in cricket history, recently opened up about the current generation of cricketers he enjoys watching. Known for his powerful strokeplay and formidable presence at the crease during the golden era of West Indies cricket, Greenidge has rarely commented on modern players. But in a recent interview, he surprised fans by naming a current Indian star as his personal favourite.
Gordon Greenidge names the Indian player he likes watching
In a recent interview with TOI, Greenidge was asked about the last cricketer he watched and really liked. He named Virat Kohli and also mentioned watching Rishabh Pant, though he clarified that he had only seen the highlights.
“Virat Kohli. I watched Pant. But I watched the highlights,” Greenidge stated.
Kohli has been one of the biggest ambassadors of the game. Having recently retired from the Test format after stepping away from T20Is a year ago, his impact on cricket is beyond words. He has stellar numbers to his name, with over 26,000 runs across formats and more than 80 international centuries.
Greenidge also reflects on Rishabh Pant’s aggressive batting style
Meanwhile, Greenidge was also asked about the criticism Pant often faces for his aggressive style of batting in Test cricket. He responded by saying that if Pant’s approach works, it’s great, but if it doesn’t, he and the team are likely to be disappointed. Greenidge noted that it’s simply the way Pant prefers to play and feels most comfortable. He recalled a moment during a Test match at Headingley when Pant, on zero, stepped out and hit Ben Stokes over his head — an act that left commentators stunned. Greenidge described it as an example of Pant’s fearless style, adding that some players are simply more courageous than others.
“If it comes off, great. If it doesn’t, I’m sure he and the rest of the team are going to be very disappointed. It’s the way he prefers to play and feels more at ease playing. When he came down and hit the guy (Ben Stokes) over the back of his head in a Test match at Headingley, the commentators were shocked. I think he was on naught. It was just amazing the way he plays. Some players are more courageous than others,” further added.
