New Zealand‘s cricket squad for the upcoming two-Test matches in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, has taken a last-minute adjustment with the exclusion of batter-bowling allrounder Glenn Phillips due to injury. In a swift move, another all-rounder has been named as Phillips’ replacement for the first Test starting July 30, 2025, in Bulawayo. Star player’s inclusion brings an experienced and versatile option to the Black Caps lineup, promising to maintain the balance and competitive edge of the team as they face Zimbabwe.

New Zealand’s white ball all-rounder returns to Tests

Michael Bracewell, 34, who made his Test debut for New Zealand in June 2022, returns to the Test arena after last playing in March 2023. He has contributed 24 wickets and 259 runs across eight Test matches, highlighting his capacity as a reliable allrounder. New Zealand head coach Rob Walter emphasized Bracewell’s suitability as the closest like-for-like replacement to Phillips, praising his experience and the skillset that aligns with the team’s balance.

Bracewell, initially left out of the Test squad due to commitments with The Hundred competition, was available as his schedule with the T20 squad coincided with the Test series schedule. Walter also mentioned the strategic decision to have Bracewell participate in the first Test and reassess for the second match.

Bracewell’s career reflects resilience and adaptability; not only is he capable with the bat, but he also bowls off-spin, offering tactical depth. His prior performances—including a notable Test debut and impact in limited-overs formats—bolster the Black Caps’ lineup against Zimbabwe. The decision to include him leverages his current presence with the T20 side, allowing immediate reinforcement without disrupting team dynamics.

New Zealand to face Zimbabwe in Bulawayo

The two-Test match series against Zimbabwe represents an important opportunity for the Black Caps to consolidate their standing in international cricket and fine-tune their squad ahead of upcoming global tournaments. The first Test runs from July 30 to August 3, followed by the second from August 7 to August 11.

The Black Caps are mindful that every match provides a chance to accumulate valuable points in the World Test Championship, and the addition of an experienced, multifaceted player like Bracewell is part of the strategy to ensure consistent performances. While Phillips’ absence impairs the original plans, the seamless inclusion of Bracewell underscores the team’s depth and flexibility. Post the first Test, the coaching staff will evaluate player performances and may adjust the squad for the second Test accordingly. Meanwhile, Bracewell is slated to depart Zimbabwe immediately after the first Test to join his franchise Southern Brave for The Hundred competition.
