With the Asia Cup 2025 just around the corner, Afghanistan are leaving no stone unturned in their preparation. The team, which has often impressed with its fighting spirit on the global stage, is keen to strengthen every aspect of its game. In a bid to enhance fielding standards, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has brought in fresh expertise to their coaching staff.
Afghanistan appoints a new fielding coach ahead of Asia Cup 2025
On Wednesday (August 27), the ACB confirmed the appointment of former Ireland international John Mooney as the national side’s new fielding coach. This marks a return for Mooney, who previously worked with the Afghan team between 2018 and 2019. He replaces Shane McDermott, who has since joined Pakistan’s coaching setup.
Mooney’s credentials are noteworthy—he featured in 91 internationals for Ireland, including appearances in three ICC Cricket World Cups and two T20 World Cups. His coaching journey has been equally diverse, having worked not only with Afghanistan but also with the West Indies in 2019 and more recently with the Ireland women’s side. Armed with multiple ECB coaching certifications, Mooney is expected to inject discipline and modern training methods into Afghanistan’s fielding unit.

Alongside Mooney, Australian physiotherapist Nirmalan Thanabalasingam has also joined the backroom staff. With a strong background in sports science and physiotherapy, Thanabalasingam brings vast experience, having previously worked with Sri Lanka Cricket, Sydney Thunder, Rangpur Riders, and most recently the Desert Vipers in ILT20. His appointment underlines Afghanistan’s intent to prioritize player fitness and injury management ahead of a crucial year.
High expectations from Afghan side in the Asia Cup
Afghanistan are currently holding a preparation camp in Abu Dhabi as they gear up for a tri-nation T20I series against Pakistan and the UAE before heading into the Asia Cup. With new additions to the support staff, expectations from fans are soaring. The team has already proved its mettle against top sides in recent years, and with improved fielding standards and fitness levels, Afghan supporters hope the squad can make a strong statement in the Asia Cup 2025.
