The Indian cricket team stands at the dawn of a new era, with young talents stepping up to take charge and shape the future. Among the most debated aspects is the captaincy, especially as the future of stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli remains uncertain for the ICC ODI World Cup 2027.

BCCI eyes fresh leadership for ODI World Cup 2027

According to a recent Dainik Jagran report, the BCCI is considering Shreyas Iyer for the position of India’s ODI captain, signaling a new era for the team. The current skipper, Rohit  is already 38 and is unlikely to be part of the setup for the World Cup 2027. During the Champions Trophy, Rohit was the ODI captain and Shubman Gill was the vice-captain. A BCCI source explained that with the current workload, no player can captain all three formats.

The earlier reports also suggests that the upcoming white-ball tour of Australia could be the final international outing for both Rohit and Kohli, who have already bid farewell to T20Is and Tests. A meeting is expected to be held after the Asia Cup to take a call on the matter. Interestingly, Iyer was among the top contenders for the Asia Cup 2025 squad but missed out, adding to the intrigue of this new captaincy discussion.

Why Shubman Gill is not being considered for ODI captaincy?

The report further stated that Gill has an excellent record in ODIs and has recently served as the format’s vice-captain. However, he is not being considered for the ODI captaincy, stating that it’s due to his current workload and the demands of leading in all three formats. The source explained that initially, they considered making him the captain across all three formats, but the constant tournament schedule makes this impossible. Playing as a captain in all three formats is vastly different from playing as a regular player. A captain has to make numerous decisions and requires both physical and mental dedication.
