Zimbabwe are gearing up for the much-awaited home ODI series against Sri Lanka, a contest that promises to test their depth and resilience. The Chevrons, who last played the format in February against Ireland, will be eager to make a strong impression as they have announced squad for the battle against the Islanders, which begins on August 29 in Harare.

Brendon Taylor makes his comeback to ODIs

Zimbabwe cricket fans have reason to celebrate as one of the country’s most decorated players, Brendan Taylor, is set to wear the national colors once again. The veteran wicketkeeper-batter, who last featured in an ODI back in September 2021 against Ireland, has been named in Zimbabwe’s 16-member squad for the upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka.

The 38-year-old’s career took an unexpected turn when he announced his retirement in 2021, shortly after his final ODI. In early 2022, Taylor revealed how he was trapped by corrupt approaches and blackmailed due to personal struggles, including substance abuse. His decision to come clean saw the ICC hand him a three-and-a-half-year ban for not reporting the incident immediately.

Since then, Taylor has worked on his recovery, and his return is being seen as a story of resilience, redemption, and his enduring love for Zimbabwe cricket.

Boost for Zimbabwe’s bowling unit

Alongside Taylor, Zimbabwe will welcome back pace duo Richard Ngarava and Blessing Muzarabani, both of whom return from injury. Their availability is a big plus for the Chevrons, who last played an ODI series against Ireland at home in February.

The selectors have also brought in fresh faces to inject new energy into the team. Clive Madande, Tony Munyonga, Brad Evans, and uncapped seamer Ernest Masuku have been drafted into the squad, replacing four players from the previous series.
