In a nail-biting encounter at Basseterre on August 19, 2025, St Lucia Kings narrowly defeated St Kitts and Nevis Patriots by 3 runs in the 6th match of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2025. Roston Chase‘s all-round performance led the Kings to 200/8, with his 61 off 38 balls and a crucial 2/27 with the ball. Despite a gallant chase by Jason Holder (63) and Navin Bidaisee (50), the Patriots were restricted to 197/6, falling just short of the target. The thrilling finish propelled the Kings to the top of the points table.

St Lucia Kings’ batting display under Roston Chase sets a challenging target

St Lucia Kings set a formidable target of 201 after posting 200/8 in their 20 overs, thanks to some explosive batting and crucial contributions across the order. Johnson Charles gave the Kings a strong start, smashing 52 runs off 28 balls, including four boundaries and four sixes. He was particularly dominant in the powerplay, hitting freely to ensure that the Kings were on track to post a big total. His partnership with Tim Seifert (12 off 9 balls) was short-lived but effective, adding 21 runs for the first wicket before Seifert fell to Waqar Salamkheil.

Following Seifert’s departure, Ackeem Auguste’s stay at the crease was brief as he went for a duck, falling to Mayers. However, Roston Chase’s steady hand ensured the innings did not collapse. Chase played a calm yet aggressive knock, scoring 61 runs off 38 balls. His innings was the backbone of the Kings’ total, featuring eight boundaries and one six. After Charles’ dismissal, Tim David continued to provide impetus with his quick-fire 46 from 23 balls, with five sixes, though he was dismissed just before the 20th over by Holder.

David Wiese (7) and Alzarri Joseph (1) didn’t manage to make much of an impact, while Delano Potgieter added a valuable 13 runs off 12 balls. As the Kings’ innings came to an end, they reached a total of 200/8, with Chase remaining unbeaten on 61. The Patriots’ bowlers fought back in the latter stages with Waqar Salamkheil and Fazalhaq Farooqi claiming two wickets each, but the Kings had set a daunting target.

St Kitts and Nevis Patriots’ fight falls short in thrilling CPL 2025 chase

Chasing 201, the Patriots had an uphill battle from the outset. Andre Fletcher and Kyle Mayers attempted to lay the foundation, but their partnership was short-lived. Fletcher, who had started positively, was dismissed for 25 off 19 balls by Khary Pierre, leaving the Patriots at 43/1. Mayers followed soon after, dismissed by David Wiese for 13 off 9 balls.

The early wickets put immense pressure on the Patriots, and it was up to Rilee Rossouw to stabilize the innings. However, Rossouw (11 off 12) failed to contribute much before he was dismissed by Chase. At 49/3, the Patriots needed a big partnership, and they found it in the form of Navin Bidaisee and Holder, who played a remarkable counter-attacking partnership. Holder, in particular, played some blistering strokes, scoring 63 runs off just 29 balls with three fours and six sixes. Bidaisee supported him well, adding 50 runs off 36 balls, including two fours and four sixes.

The partnership brought the Patriots within reach of the target, but the required run rate continued to rise. Holder’s dismissal at 138/5 in the 15th over was a massive blow, and despite a valiant late effort from Jyd Goolie (15* from 13 balls), the Patriots ultimately fell short. The Kings’ bowlers, led by Chase (2/27) and Khary Pierre (2/25), held their nerves, and the Patriots ended their chase at 197/6, just 3 runs short of the target. While the Patriots showed great character, their late surge wasn’t enough to overhaul the total.
