The end of Dhanashree Verma and Yuzvendra Chahal’s marriage has not only marked a personal heartbreak for the couple but also sparked widespread conversation about the emotional toll of public scrutiny. The duo, who tied the knot in December 2020, announced their divorce on March 20, 2025, after five years of marriage. While fans expressed shock and disappointment, the separation became even more controversial when Chahal appeared in court wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with the words, ‘Be Your Own Sugar Daddy.’
Now, for the first time since their split, Dhanashree has spoken candidly about the pain she endured during and after the separation, shedding light on how deeply her parents were affected by the episode.
Dhanashree Verma staying strong for her family
In an emotional conversation with Humans of Bombay, the choreographer and social media personality described the divorce as “confusing” and said she had to put on a brave front for the sake of her parents. While she had learned to ignore trolling and negative comments online, her family was far more vulnerable.
“I had to stay strong to make my parents feel better. We belong to this generation, so we know not to pay attention to negative comments, but how do you explain that to your parents? My parents’ friends would call them, ‘Yeh kya ho gaya?’ It was a delicate situation because I also needed strength and so did my parents,” Dhanashree recalled.
Dhanashree’s parents struggled with societal pressure
She revealed that the constant judgment from society took a heavy toll on her parents. Her mother often broke down, and the family started avoiding phone calls to escape endless questions.
“It was so overwhelming and not required because parents feel so much pressure from society. And then when they have to deal with something like this, how do they fix that?” she said, adding that she had to firmly instruct her parents not to respond to calls that only added to their stress.
Dhanashree admitted that walking out of her marriage to a celebrated international cricketer was a daunting decision, one that required immense courage. She credited her parents for giving her the strength to stand by her choice.
“To even take that decision requires a lot of courage. Knowing that you are with someone who is more powerful than you, to even come to that decision of leaving that partnership requires a lot of courage, and my parents reminded me of that every day. They kept telling me how proud they are that I made this decision. It’s not easy,” she explained.
Dhanashree chooses silence over response to online trolling
Despite the media glare and incessant online trolling, Dhanashree chose not to retaliate publicly. Instead, she immersed herself in work and focused on the healing process.
“I haven’t healed completely but I am working towards it. Silence is not easy, it takes a lot of a person to just stay silent,” she added.
The couple, who once shared their joyous moments freely on social media and were adored by fans for their chemistry, has now moved on separately. Their divorce has highlighted not only the strains of public life but also the ripple effect such situations have on families caught in the storm.
