The cricketing world was abuzz with reports that batter Karun Nair was unable to join his team, Mysore Warriors, for the KSCA Maharaja T20 Trophy. It’s a surprising development given his strong connection to Karnataka cricket and it begs the question of why a player of his stature would be absent from a major domestic tournament.
Karun Nair’s return to action put on hold
As per the reports by MyKhel indicate that Karun Nair’s participation in the Maharaja T20 Trophy was blocked by a lack of fitness clearance from the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE), formerly known as National Cricket Academy. The decision stems from a finger injury he sustained during the fifth Test against England at the Oval, which has since kept him sidelined. Though he had joined the Mysore Warriors squad, he was required to return to Bengaluru to continue his rehabilitation at the CoE. While his teammate Prasidh Krishna has received clearance after recovering from his own injury, Nair remains on a waiting list, with the BCCI prioritizing his full recovery before he can return to the field.

Nair’s batting struggle on the England tour
While the injury has sidelined him from the domestic T20 league, Nair’s recent performances have been a mixed bag, which adds another layer to this story. Although he was part of India’s Test tour to England, his contributions were modest. In four matches, he scored 205 runs at an average of 25.62, with a highest score of 57. He showed flashes of his brilliance, getting good starts in several innings but was unable to convert them into big scores. For one celebrated as a triple centurion, the lack of consistency has been a concern. As he waits for fitness clearance from the BCCI, his focus will undoubtedly be on returning to form and regaining the rhythm that once made him a standout for India.
