Day 2 of the fifth Test between England and India witnessed an unusual yet striking scene, as every England player stepped onto the field sporting white headbands. The gesture immediately caught the attention of fans and viewers, sparking curiosity around the symbolic display during this crucial clash at the Oval.
A heartfelt tribute to a cricketing great
The reason behind the gesture was later revealed to be a touching tribute to the late Graham Thorpe. The former England batter, who represented his country in 100 Tests and later served as an assistant coach, tragically passed away last August after a long battle with anxiety and depression.
Friday marked what would have been Thorpe’s 56th birthday, and with the match being played at his home ground, Surrey, the day was officially designated as “A day for Thorpey.” Fans and players alike joined in the gesture, celebrating the life and career of one of England’s most respected cricketing figures.
Headbands to support mental health
The headbands, designed in the style Thorpe famously wore during his playing days, carried his initials and image. They were sold for £5 each, with proceeds going to the mental health charity Mind. The England squad donned the headbands during their warm-ups and throughout play, with several players, including Joe Root and injured skipper Ben Stokes, visibly moved by the tribute. Both shared close ties with Thorpe during his coaching tenure and were seen embracing the emotional moment.
England dominate India’s lower order
While the tribute created a touching atmosphere, England’s bowlers wasted no time stamping their authority on the match. India, resuming at 204 for six, were bowled out for 224 within just 34 balls on the second morning. Karun Nair’s gritty half-century from the previous evening offered some resistance, aided by brief support from Sai Sudharsan and Washington Sundar.
However, Josh Tongue’s fiery spell accounted for key wickets, including Ravindra Jadeja and Sudharsan, while Gus Atkinson, making a strong return to the Test side, claimed a superb five-wicket haul. India’s tail offered little resistance in seaming conditions, allowing England to wrap up the innings swiftly under bright Oval skies.
