Gautam Gambhir is widely known for his composed and calculated presence in the dressing room. However, on Monday, August 4, the usually calm Indian head coach could not hold back his emotions as Shubman Gill-led side pulled off a breathtaking win over England in the fifth Test at The Oval. With four wickets needed for India and 35 runs standing between England and a series win, the pressure-filled atmosphere brought out a side of Gambhir that fans are not used to seeing.

The tension grew as England’s Jamie Overton struck two quick boundaries, keeping the hosts in the hunt. But Mohammed Siraj swung the momentum in India’s favour by dismissing Jamie Smith and Overton in rapid succession. Prasidh Krishna then joined the party, shattering Josh Tongue’s stumps to put India on the brink of a famous win.
The BCCI later released a behind-the-scenes video from the dressing room, showing Gambhir clapping with intensity, giving instructions to the fielders, and pacing restlessly as England’s last pair, Gus Atkinson and an injured Chris Woakes, resisted. When Siraj finally bowled Atkinson to seal the match, Gambhir leapt in joy, embracing Morne Morkel, Sitanshu Kothak, and T Dilip before charging onto the field to celebrate with the players.
