India’s star batter Shubman Gill continues to dominate the ICC Men’s ODI Player Rankings, maintaining his top position amid a surge of Australian batsmen climbing the list following their recent home series against South Africa. Despite losing the series 2-1, Australia’s thrilling record-breaking victory in the third ODI saw multiple players make significant jumps in the rankings.

Australian batters rise despite South Africa series defeat

Australia recently endured a 2-1 series loss at home to South Africa but ended on a high note with an emphatic victory in the final ODI played in Mackay. In that match, the Australian team posted a mammoth total of 431 for 2, smashing records with an overwhelming margin of victory. Star batsmen Travis Head, Mitch Marsh, and Cameron Green all scored centuries, making headline contributions. Head improved his ranking to equal 11th, Marsh climbed four places to 44th, and Green made a remarkable leap of 40 slots to reach 78th. Additionally, Josh Inglis also gained 23 places to stand 64th following his impressive innings of 87 runs in the second ODI.

Bowlers and other ranking after recent glitch

The ICC Men’s ODI bowling rankings witnessed a tightening race at the top as Sri Lankan spinner Maheesh Theekshana joined South African Keshav Maharaj with equal rating points after the recent series. Maharaj’s performance dipped slightly after conceding 1 for 57 in the final match, allowing Theekshana’s status to rise despite not playing in the series. South Africa’s Lungi Ngidi made the biggest jump among bowlers, moving six places to 28th with seven wickets across the three games.

On the batting front beyond the top trio, India’s Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have steadied their rankings following recent disruptions caused by an ICC glitch a few weeks ago, reassuring fans of their continued prominence in the ODI format. This latest update reflects shifting dynamics in international cricket, with Australian players capitalizing on strong individual performances despite overall team results.
