India’s first Independence Day outing came in a Test against England, played from August 14–19. Rain washed out much of the game, ending in a draw.

2001 – Embarrassing defeat at the hands of Sri Lanka

Fifty years later, India faced Sri Lanka and endured a heavy defeat, losing by 10 wickets at Galle.

2014 & 2015 – Back-to-back setbacks

In 2014, England thrashed India by an innings and 244 runs. The following year, Sri Lanka handed India a 64-run loss in a Test.

2019 – Virat Kohli’s century seals ODI glory

Virat Kohli’s unbeaten 114 lit up Port of Spain, guiding India to a six-wicket win over West Indies and sealing the series in style.

2021 – Lord’s Test heroics

India’s most recent August 15 match delivered one of its greatest wins. At Lord’s, KL Rahul’s ton set the stage, but it was Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami’s gritty 70-run stand for the last wicket that turned the tide. India’s bowlers then skittled England for 120 to secure a famous 151-run victory.
