The Pretoria Capitals have made a bold move ahead of the upcoming SA20 season, roping in former Indian captain as their new head coach. The fourth edition of the league kicks off on December 26, and the legend’s arrival marks a fresh era for the franchise. He steps into the shoes of Jonathan Trott, who guided the team previously.

The Capitals have appointed icon Sourav Ganguly as their head coach for the upcoming season. Notably, the franchise have enjoyed mixed fortunes since the league’s inception. They stormed to the final in the inaugural season, only to be halted by Sunrisers Eastern Cape. However, the next two campaigns saw them struggle for consistency, finishing fifth on both occasions and missing out on the playoffs.

With Ganguly at the helm, the franchise will be hoping to rediscover the fire that once made them serious title contenders. Known as the ‘Prince of Kolkata’ Ganguly has always been celebrated for his sharp cricketing mind and fearless leadership—qualities Pretoria Capitals now hope can turn their fortunes around.

First time as head coach for the Indian icon

While this will be his first official role as a head coach, Ganguly is no stranger to cricket administration and mentorship. Between 2015 and 2019, he served as the president of the Cricket Association of Bengal. He also had a short stint as mentor of the Delhi Capitals in the IPL before taking over as president of the BCCI.

More recently, his involvement with JSW Sports as their director of cricket since 2023 brought him closer to franchise-level management. JSW, which co-owns Delhi Capitals in both the IPL and WPL, also runs the Pretoria outfit, making this move a natural progression.

Ganguly’s first test as head coach will come sooner than expected—the player auction scheduled in September. With Pretoria Capitals looking to strengthen their squad, Ganguly’s inputs are expected to play a crucial role in shaping the team’s strategy for the new season.
