Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc has called time on his T20 international career, bringing the curtain down on a decorated 65-match stint in which he claimed 79 wickets. His tally places him second on Australia’s all-time T20I wicket-takers list, behind only leg-spinner Adam Zampa.
Mitchell Starc to focus on Tests and ODIs after announcing T20I retirement
The 34-year-old confirmed the decision just six months before the 2026 T20 World Cup, explaining that he wants to channel his energy into Test matches and ODIs. Starc underlined that the next few years hold major milestones, including an away Test series in India, another Ashes campaign and the 2027 ODI World Cup.
“I have loved every minute of every T20 game I have played for Australia, particularly the 2021 World Cup, not just because we won but the incredible group and the fun along the way,” said Starc in a statement.
“Looking ahead to an away Indian Test tour, the Ashes and an ODI World Cup in 2027, I feel this is my best way forward to remain fresh, fit and at my best for those campaigns. It also gives the bowling group time to prepare for the T20 World Cup in the matches leading into that tournament.”
Starc continues to play franchise cricket
Starc made his T20I debut in 2012 against Pakistan and quickly established himself as a strike weapon with the new ball. His ability to swing deliveries at high pace and deliver incisive spells in ICC tournaments made him a key figure in Australia’s white-ball setup. His most notable achievement came in 2021, when he played a central role in guiding Australia to their maiden T20 World Cup title.
Although stepping away from the shortest international format, Starc remains available for franchise cricket, including the IPL, while continuing to lead Australia’s attack in Tests and ODIs.
